Kanimozhi’s bail hearing deferred to October 17 – Suvarna news

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 11:13 AM PDT

The bail plea of DMK MP Kanimozhi is now most likely to be heard on October 17. The bail plea was scheduled to be heard on Saturday, but lawyers of both Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as well as Kanimozhi asked the court to give another date for the hearing of the bail matter. According to the Supreme Court order, a bail cannot be granted till framing of charges is done. Hearing the plea, judge OP Saini said that the CBI could frame the charges by October 15, and the bail pleas of Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharat Kumar’s could be heard on October 17. However, the bail plea of other accused will be heard on Monday. The DMK leader has been in Tihar Jail since May 20 for being an alleged beneficiary in the 2G spectrum allocation scam. Kanimozhi had on September 16 applied for the bail at a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Patiala House along with Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar. Kanimozhi, the daughter of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Karunanidhi, applied for bail on the grounds that charges were not yet framed and they should be granted bail as per the Supreme Court order. Kanimozhi and Kumar, named as accused in the second chargesheet for allegedly taking bribe of Rs 200 crore, were arrested on May 20 after the special court dismissed their bail pleas in the case.

Ronald Singson, accompanied by his mother Evelyn, leaves the Hong Kong District Court yesterday. AP | Zoom HONG KONG — The district court here yesterday deferred the verdict on Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson for drug trafficking. Wan Chai District Court Judge Joseph Yau ordered the reading of the sentence on Singson deferred to Feb. 24, a day after the court hears mitigating factors on the case. The court also allowed the extension of Singson’s bail even as prosecutor Virginia Lau moved for its cancellation and recommitment of the Ilocos lawmaker to jail. Lau had argued that if Singson would be convicted, the likely sentence is three and a half years. “Even if you (the court) rule that the defendant can consume the drugs on his own, the defendant faces immediate custodial sentence. There’s a real risk. And there’s only one-third discount if the defendant is convicted with imprisonment term,” Lau explained. Under Hong Kong’s dangerous drugs ordinance, the sentence for trafficking six grams of prohibited drugs starts with a three-year imprisonment. A guilty plea would mean a one-third discount from the jail sentence. In allowing Singson’s continued freedom, the court stressed the situation would be the same when he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and asked for an inquiry to argue that the drugs were for his own use. Singson said he is ready to face the
